BELOW QUOTA
-STUDENT TEACHERS FOR AUCKLAND COLLEGE For the first time for many years the number of applicants for admission to the Teachers' Training College in the New Year from the Auckland Education Board's district is below the quota. This fact was mentioned this morning by the chairman of the Auckland Education Board, Mr. \V. J. Campbell, in response to an inquiry.
Mr. Campbell explained that the quota of trainees for the Auckland board's district was 234, while 40 students from the Taranaki district and four from the native schools' service were also to be admitted to the training college. From the Auckland district a total of 213 students had been recommended for admission, and of this number 155 were young women.
Mr. Campbell added that it was an unusual position for the number of applicants not to exceed the quota. There was a big shortage of male applicants, apparently due to war conditions generally, and the question of making up the quota has been referred to the Education Department. Last year the number of applicants for admission to the training college was approximately 300. Next year there would be approximately 609 students at the college, the balance between the new admissions being made up by first and second year students and a few three-year trainees taking specialist courses.
