OTAHIHI" BOROUGH The Mayor. Mr. C. R. Petrie, M.P.. presided at last evening's meeting of the OUihuhu Borough Council. Borouah Rollrr.—An application from the Otahuhu Technical High School for the use or the borough roller for the purpose of preparing cucket pitches and levelling the new play area was declined. Floodlights In Sturge* Park.—The Otahuhu Amateur Athletic Clu'o wrote expressing regret that the application lor a restricted use of floodlights to enable the holding of evening meetings had not been supported by the council. The letter stated that the Otahuhu Council wps the only one in the south suburban area which had not given its support. . New Zealand Society for Closer Relations with Russia.—The secretary of the local branch wrote expressing dissatisfaction with the council's decision not to permit a public myelins being held on a Sunday night or to receive a deputation from the society. A further request for a permit to hold a public meeting on a Sunday night and for a deputation to wait upon the council was made, but a resolution to reaffirm the previous decision was unanimously carried. Street Numbering.—The borouch engineer. Mr. S. Annabel, tabled a proposal in connection with the numbering of houses in the different, streets in the borough. The proposal ♦hat all streets running north to south, including the C-reat South Road, be numbered irom north to south and all other streets be numbered commencing from the end nearest to the Great Soul.h Road was adopted. Odd numbers are to be allocated to the righthp nd side of streets and even numbers to the left. The lack of a proper numbering system h«\s created considerable confusion in the past, and the engineer will now be in a position to allocate numbers in any street upon requests from residents. Motor Car Crossings.—Several types of motor car crossings on footpaths have been tried on the new system of concrete paths end have not proven successful. A comprehensive r«_ j. ort submitted by the engineer was thoroughly discussed. In the report the engineer, who has had a wide experience in the laying down of crossings, gave a description of the many types and strongly rccommcnded the council to adhere to a policv of * dished crossings" and that no change be mode r'rem the decision excepting in extreme cases. This was agreed to. * Signboards on Great South Road.—A report submitted by the engineer disclosed that there were at least 24 signs all on private properties which would come within the scope of a reasonable interpretation of the recently passed by-law whicn prohibits the erection of any sign on or visible from the Great South Road. The works committee is to view the signs and submit recommendations.
