LICENSES FOR IMPORTS (0.C.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. "The Government seems to wait until it finds something that is unobtainable from overseas and then grants an import license for it," declared Mr. V. E. Hamilton at the meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce during a discussion of importers' difficulties. Mr. Hamilton said it was a common experience lor importers to have their licenses held up for considerable periods. Finally they would receive polite advice from the Government that the licenses had been granted, but when they came to place the orders they found that the articles by that time could not be procured. When an application was made for an import license the importer was usually whether there was no available substitute for the article he wished to import, or whether it could not be obtained I from some other source.
