ALGERIAN DISAPPOINTS

Algerian, one of this year's small team of New Zealand horses at the Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting, which opened on Saturday, must nave disappointed his party by his unplaced performances in the Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps. He has been withdrawn from the Caulfield Cup, and apparently the intention is to return to the Dominion. Algerian is well engaged at the New Zealand Ouip meeting next month. A SUCCESSFUL MATRON At Levin, Horomea has foaled a chestnut colt to Golden Eagle, the young Fairway horse who died a few months after his importation from England. Horomea's first five foals to four different sires were fillies, including Mittie and Lady Tinkle, but last year she tlhrew a colt to Phaleron Bay. Tihe arrival of another colt to such a well-bred horse as Golden Eagle is some compensation to Messrs. W. H. Hume and O. Roberta for the loss of Lady Tinkle, who was expected to be better this season than ever previously.
