NEARLY £3000 IN
ORPHANAGES APPEAL SOME RETURNS TO COME Though sundry donations and some suburban returns are still coming in, a total of £2974 has so far been received from sources throughout the province as a result of yesterday's united orphanages appeal. The street collection in Auckland city and suburbs realised £1033, and there were three special donations of £500, £250 and £100. The sum of £227 was collected at Hamilton, and there was one special 'donation of £50. Sundry donations received at the office of the Orphanages United Council, which have so far been counted, amount to £281 and country returns £116. There are still some suburban returns to be added to the total. Pleasure at the generous response of the public was expressed by the president of the Orphanages United Council, Mr. C. F. Bennett, who stated that the complete total would not be known until late in October as eight of the country centres would not have made their appeals until then Last year's appeal realised £5230.
