FIRE IN CAR

Fire broke out in a light car near the Whau Bridge, Great North Road, shortly after three o'clock this afternoon. The car was driven by Mr Herbert Horrocks, 32, Belwood Avenue, Mount Eden. The Avondale Fire Brigade was summoned, but the damage was slight.

SOCCER COMRADES OUTPLAY NORTH SHORE IN FALCON CUP Though one down at half-time, Comrades staged a revival over North Shore in the second spell of the main game at Blandford Park to win eventually by five goals to one. Playing at centre forward, Masters made himself the hero of the day by scoring four of the five goals for Comrades. In the earlier match at Soccer headquarters for the Falcon Cup, MetrorCollege was one ahead of Air Force in a single-goal game. The Dacre Cup contest, in the second division, resulted in Mount Albert Grammar School Old Boys beating North Shore by the odd goal in a 7-goal match. COMRADES EASILY Xorth Shore: Crazton, Bootih, Haycock, Bain, Dacre, Kendall, Agate, Price, Richards, Valentine, Sime. Comrades.—McCamish, Riggans, McKenna, Matthews, Fintibam, Kennedy Ourley, Evans, Maetere, Francis, Walters. Comrades won the t'oss and Richards set the ball rolling for Shore. The first to show up, Comrades made a decisive raid, in which C'urley wae prominent. Hie cross went to Maetere, who shot hard, but Craxton saved brilliantly. Shore then took the offensive, and good combination by its vanguard resulted in Sime opening the scoring ledger. North Shore 1, Comrades 0. Conjrades tried hard to equalise, but .jraxton was eafe in goa. Shore soon took ■he offensive once more, and Richards tested McCamieh with a good drive, which the goalie did well fo save. Aβ pivot for Shore Richards was outstanding. He broke through on several occasions, only to see McCamieh stop his drives or the ball go inches wide of the poet. Comrades •attacked per medium of Francis, but Craxton fisted clear. A few moments later Maetere shot over the cross-bar when well placed. Some clever work by Richards and' Price looked certain for an addition to the Shore score, but Price hit the upright with a hard drive and the ball rebounded into play. A melee in front of Comrades' goal saw McKenna clear. The young Shore playere ■'-•ere now having the better of exchanges, and Sime again tested McCaniieh with a brilliant shot. Although hard pressed, Riggans was a tower of strength in Comrades' defence, making several splendid clearances. At half-time the score board read: North Shore 1 Comrades 0

In the second period Shore made an early thrust, in which Sime was prominent, but hie shot proved faulty. Conuvidee took a hand, and a long clearance from Kennedy saw Francis pasw to Walters, who in turn centred to Masters. The centre forward had the better of the encounter with Booth, and he gave Oraxton no quarter. Comrades 1, North Sh ore 1. From the kick-off Fincham cent Curley away on the right. Craxton being blocked by Walters and Masters took his eeeond. Comrades 2, North Shore 1. A further attack wae made by Comrades, but Haycock nipped in to save well. Shore wae unlucky when, in a raid by Comrades, Bain deflected the ball into hie own net in trying to paee 'back to hie goalie. In consequence Comrades added another goal to its liet. The Ellis brothers sent the ball across field, where Caisley made several opportunities for Williams, but the veteran forward found Speed and Brown too quick for him. Just before the Interval Air Force made a decisive thrust, but Gordon effected a brilliant save from Hope-Ede At »his stage play was even, with both sides striving hard to gain advantage, but the defences withheld the onslaught.' Half-time came with a clean scoreboard. The stcond spell Saw Hannan lead an attack on Metro's right wing, but his cross was well cleared by Moore. Wi Uoughby then made a nice dash down the line for Air Force, but his centre also went begging. Doidge. who was the Service custodian, took risks with several speculators, and when he was tested with a hard drive by McLaughUn, he made a perfect save by tipping over the cross-bar. Shortly after Metro-College made a further raid, and the first goal of the game came when Hope-Ede took a shot which beat Doidge. An attack by Willoughby, on the Air Force right wine, looked dangerous, but Speed effected a good clearance. Walters was next to show tip with a promising dash, but his cross was not utilised. North Shore attacked from the kick off, and a smart raid down the left saw Young open the scoring. Mount Albert replied with several lively salleys that brought Wlllins Into action to clear in good style. Mount Albert came again, and Walker evened the score from a melee. Almost Immediately Shore regained the lead, two concerted forward movements being finalised by Corbett and Young. The final stages of the spell were keenly fought out. and a good forward rally by Mount Albert saw Hutchlnson score a good goal just before the Interval. The second spell opened with lively exchanges, but both sides were putting up a solid defence which proved herd to penetrate. Play continued on even lines, but there was more thrust In the Shore attacks, and Kirk had more to do than the opposing goalie, but he cleared In good style when under pressure. Mount Albert eventually evened the score, when Jones secured from a forward raid to beat Wlllins with a good shot. After some further lively play a smart rally by the Mount Albert forwards ended with a neat goal by Edgar to give them the lead.
