LOW REJECT FIGURE

EAST COAST APPLE CROP (0.C.) GISBORNE, this day. Apple production in the Gisborne district during the past season was smaller than expected, but ■ the quality was excellent and only 1.25 per cent of the total received at the central depot in Gisborne was rejected. A total of 23,075 cases of apples were passed for sale after inspection at the depot, together with 4403 cases of pears, making a total of the two fruits of 27,478 cases. The orchard instructor, Mr J. D. Kennedy, stated that the small percentage of rejects reflected great credit on the growers, and to have the figure down to onlv 1.25 per cent was almost unheard of in the Dominion. During the picking season opportunity was taken to build up cool store supplies, which at the end of the season totalled 12 723 cases of apples and 2243 cases of pears. The fruit was selected from the varieties, sizes and grades that give the greatest prospect of long storage life. The district lemon crop is coming to hand in larger quantities than was expected a few months ago, much attention being turned to the lemon groves and better class fruit than formerly.
