FIRE AT GAS WORKS
GOOD SAVE BY BRIGADE (0.C.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. The possibility of a major conflagration, at the New Plymouth gas works in Gill Street was nipped in the bud when, as the result of a general alarm, the brigade turned out in full strength and quickly extinguished a fire that had broken out between the coal storage sheds and the gas-making retorts. On his routine rounds of the company's premises an employee noticed 1 smoke and flames issuing from the, vicinity of the coal storage bins about 6.20 p.m. and immediately gave the alarm. When the brigade reached the spot flames were licking the woodwork of the storage building and might have secured a firm hold if the warning had been unduly delayed. With 150 ft of hose the brigade quickly had the outbreak under control, and in a surprisingly short time it was completely subdued.
