FORCES FUND'S BENEFIT FROM SPORTS GYMKHANA
The Allied Sports Gymldiana at Alexandra Park on Saturday, when a feature was the trotting races, resulted in a splendid benefit ta the Fighting Forces Fund. Mr. A. E. Forrest announced this morning that t ! he sum available from the fixture was £820 7/5. LEFT "GROPING IN THE DARK" The New Zealand Trotting Conference and the Trotting Association decided to delay the publication of the Trotting Stud Book. If there is any ground for the claim that the promotion of trotting stands primarily on the possible improvement of the horse, then those in control are leaving breeders groping in the dark in search of the lines they should follow, states a Southern writer. At least a supplement of returns should be provided. ;If something in the nature of a supplement of returns since the last publication of the Trotting Stud Book is not yuovided it will naturally tend to create a lack of interest in breeding, which is the only possible line to progress. A more undesirable state of affairs could not be imagined. The question of cost should not come into consideration when many of the leading clubs hold substantial credit balances and are making considerable profits. Those in control of light-harness racing in New Zealand stand open to censure when in the light of highly prosperous conditions they allow the most essential asset to progress to become I dormant.
