AGAINST WAR
MILITARY SERVICE APPEAL
Appellant appreciates that most of his co-religionists take a different view," said counsel (Mr. J. Hogben) when Frederick Henry Bailey, aged 20, farm hand, appeared before the Armed Forces Appeal Board this morning. The appeal was on the grounds of conscientious objection. Appellant said he could not imagine Christ mowing down thousands of men with machine-guns or dropping bombs on women and children. He could not do any work under military control, but he had studied ambulance work. John Matthew Wech, farmer, of the Warkworth district, a neighbour and friend of appellant, said he had discussed the question of war with appellant and understood his views to be sincere. William Percy Bailey, of Warkworth. farmer, who had served for five years in the last war, said he had known appellant since childhood and believed he was sincere in his belief that war was wrong. ' Tho case was adjourned until next ,Ti-er-clr>y in oider that a further witness might bo called.
