SHIPS FROM JAPAN

DWINDLING OF TRADE ONE SERVICE SUSPENDED I Owing to the decline in reciprocal i trade between New Zealand and Japan the Dominion service of the. Yamashita Kisen Kaisya Line will j be suspended after the arrival on; Monday from Kobe of the motor vessel Yamagiku Maru. Advice to this effect has been received by the Auckland agents. Russell and Somers, Ltd. In making the announcement the Yamashita Shipping and Agency (Aust.) Proprietary. Ltd.. stated that immediately trade between the two countries showed any sign of improvement they would do their utmost to reopen the service. Some weeks ago an unofficial statement was made in Wellington than a ship then on the way to New Zealand from Japan would be the last of the line to this country. It was stated then that there was not much cargo offering for the service and that the new Japanese tonnage control regulations imposed as a result of shortage of ships in Japan would probably require ships to be used on more essential routes. It was believed that New Zealand cargo would be transhipped in Australia if the service should be discontinued. Shipping from Japan has been severely curtailed since the war, and the only other line operating to New Zealand at present is the Osaka Syosen Kaisya. whoso next vessel is not due to leave Japan until early in January. j
