POST IN SYRIA
NEW ZEALANDER CHOSEN CONTROL COMMISSION HEAD (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Cable advice has been received that Brigadier John Inglis Chrystall has been appointed president of the Commission of Control in Syria with the rank of major-general. Formerly of Christchurch and a pupil of Christ's College, MajorGeneral Chrystall, who is aged 55. took a diploma in agriculture at Lincoln College. After farming for three years he joined the 13th Hussars in India, being stationed at Bangalore. He was awarded a commission during the Great War. In 1930, Major-General Chrystall was stationed at Khartoum, acting for the Governor in his absence. Returning to his regiment he was seconded for duty overseas and transferred to Trahsjordania, doing important work in which he was responsible for peaceful relations between a powerful Arab leader and the Palestine authorities. In 1940, with the rank of brigadier, he was posted to the 6th Cavalry Brigade in I Palestine, where he had since remained.
