Success of Royal Jay Anticipated Here
, When Royal Jay carried ofT the Cheltenham Hack Cup at Awapuni thi>re was rejoicing in certain Auckland circle*, as the eon of Jay was fully expected to win and was supported accordingly. Royal Jay, a rising five-year-old from Elnona, first came under nol'ice when he finished strongly behind Arctic Dawn in the Farewell Hack at Te Rapa on May 19, and, a month later, he was a good third to Hinkler and Lady Bn.mbury at Tauranga. In the latter race Royal 'Jay was a long way out of hie ground at the tfurn for home, but be was going just as well as the winner at the judge. The mile and a quarter of the Cheltenham Hack Cup on Saturday was evidently to Royal Jay's liking. Mmlford t.:ok him into a good position half a mile from home, and when the field was crossing the top he sent him info the lead, ahead of Sanction, Val Pere and Renaseor. Although he appeared to be weakening towards the finish he had sufficient, in reserve to stall off Arabic, who issued a challenge on the rails. Surpai, another Auckland horse, was fourth.
