SIR G. SHIRTCLIFFE DEATH IX WELLINGTON (0.C.) WELLINGTON, this day. With a long record of public service and recognised as one of the Dominion's leading business men, Sir George Shiriclift'e, K.8.E., 0.8. E., died in Wellington yesterdav, aged 79. Born at Worksop, England, in 1862, Sir George came to New Zealand as a child and was educated in Christehurch at Christ's College. In 1890 he joined the firm of A. S. Paterson and Company as manager and partner, and in 1912 was appointed managing director. He retired in 1919 and in 1927 was appointed chairman of directors. His knighthood was conferred on him in 1936. Before the Great War Sir George was a member of the Wellington City Council and the Wellington Harbour Board and chairman of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce for varying periods. He took an active part in Red Cross activities during the war. Sir George served as a member on several important Royal Commissions in New Zealand and also served on the Hawke's Bay Rehabilitation Committee in 1931. He was for several years chairman of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and in 1935 gave £20,000 to be vested in the University of New Zealand for research work. Keenly interested in the Anglican Church, Sir George was a wellknown member of the Wellington Diocesan Synod. He is survived by Lady Shirtcliffe and by two sons and three daughters, t : MR. WILLIAM FRANKLIN A former well-known farmer of the Manawaru district, Mr. William M. Franklin, whose death occurred yesterday at his home at Mount Roskill, was a member of an early Grey Lynn family, having come out to New ZeaJand in the early 'eighties. His father, the late Mr. John Franklin, was for many years clerk of the Arch Hill Road Board. Two of his brothers, Mr. John Franklin, of Papatoetoe, and Mr. Arthur Franklin, of Mauku, were also settlers of the Manawaru and the adjacent Gordon district for a number of years. Other members of the family j are resident in Auckland city and i province.
