PACT WITH RUSSIA
A REBUKE TO CRITICS "HEAVEN-SENT OPPORTUNITY" (0.c.) SYDNEY, July 16. There is no more bitter anti-Com-munist than the Federal AttorneyI General. Mr. Hughes, but this week he administe-ed a stinging rebuke to people who would sooner be I beaten by Hitler than saved by Russia. Mr. Hughes said:— I "A small section, mainly composed of 'the nicest people,' view the pact between Russia and Britain with grave concern. They see in Russia the menacing shape of Communism rnd, fathering their robes about them, hasten to pass by on the other •Hde. In their eyes it is better that Nazi-i m should win the war than
that the Soviet armies should help to ave us. "No doubt it takes all sorts to make a world, but God save us from such narrow minded, futile and treacherous covnsels. I welcome an alliance with this great Power. I hail it with unbounded satisfaction. After Grecce and Crete, Germany, ns all the world knows, was preprr in.7 to attack Suez, the gateway to India, Australia and the Far East. The battle for Suez was to be the i-mal for an assault on Singapore by the other partner in the Axis. Then Germany swung her mighty war machine against Russia. "We must make a supreme effort to take the utmost advantage of this Heaven-sent opportunity to strike at Germany. We must smite her hip and thicrh while we have the chance. If we let this chance slip we may not ?et another."
