THEFT OF TYRES
TAXI DRIVER CONVICTED
A verdict of guilty on four charges of theft of motor tyres, with a strong recommendation to mercy, was returned by the jury in the case against Niell Walter Pearce, taxi driver, aged 28 (Mr. Henry), heard in the Supreme Court before Mr. Justice Fair yesterday afternoon. Evidence led for the Crown by Mr. V. R. Meredith. included that of a man who said he was associated with accused in the theft of motor tyres at Thames, and later in a scheme whereby they ordered motor tyres from various firms by telephone in the name of carrying firms, took charge of them from the delivery van and sold them to other motor tyre dealers. This witness said he and accused divided the proceeds.
After the jury had found accused guilty, his Honor asked the reason for the recommendation to mercy and was informed that the jury felt that accused had been led by his accomplice. The prisoner was remanded for sentence.
