HEARING OF APPEAL

CASK OF HUNGER STRIKERS

Rec. 2 p.m. SYDNEY, this day. The hunger strikers, Max Thomas anu Horace Ratliff, were borne on stretchers from the Yaralla Hospital yesterday afternoon into a special ward to face the tribunal which began the hearing of their appeal against detention under the National Security Act. Ratliff appeared to be very ill and Thomas was weak but cheerful, after the 16 days' fast, during which he had had nothing more than water and orange juice. The appeal is being held in camera and will be continued to-day, when it is expected a decision will be reached.
