AUSTRALIANS BEATEN 14—0
Air Force Wireless Men Please In Canadian Rugger Tilt
\I7HAT was billed as an added attraction turned out to be the, feature of the evening. With-out-a< doubt the exhibition Rugger tilt between New Zealand and Australian contingents stationed at the Royal Canadian Air Force No. 3 wireless station at Tuxedo stole the show. It edged out, states the "Winnipeg Free Press" of May 22, as far as spectator appeal goes, the scheduled attraction of the night, that of the Associated Fresh * Air Camps charity battle between Winnipeg Blue Bombers and North Dakota University Si our..
The sturdy New Zealanders, coached and captained by R. J. Peterson were winners of the gruelling 50-minute contest, which saw only one substitution, by a score of 14 points to 0.
A sparkling game for the winning team was played by A. G. Sutherland, the Southland wing-three-quar-ter, who was reserve for New Zealand in the second Springbok Test at Christchurch in 1937. He brought the large crowd to its feet by his breath-taking running, which netted two of his team's four tries, and he wound up the scoring by converting the final try. Sutherland's two tries were the first recorded, the others being secured by Peterson and Wells.
In its comment on the match the paper stated: "Brother Sutherland, many of his mates, and several of the Australians would come in awfully handy to any Rugby team, whether the game played would be of English, Canadian or the American variety. That lateral passing would have the Canadian Rugby Union's champion players and coaches turning handsprings."
The New Zealand team was: A. G. Brown, H. Sutton, H. Tomoana. A. G. Sutherland; A. W. Prisk, G. N. Roberts; W. L. Harvey; H. Wyllie, M. Wilkinson, C. E. Wells, L. J. Gardiner, D. J. Edgeworth, I. H. Austin, L. P. McCoy, R. J. Peterson.
