CAR CONVERSION

SHIP'S STEWARD GAOI-El) Arrested in Lome Street yesterday afternoon on a charge of unlawfully converting to his own use a motor car valued at £260. Joseph John Ryan, aged 20. a ship's steward, pleaded guilty when he came before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court to-day. Senior-Sergeant Joyce said Ryan was seen to enter two different cars in Lome Street yesterday. A passerby approached Ryan and told him to leave the motor cars alone. However. Ryan walked away, but was later seen to enter another car further along the street. He was detained and handed over to the police. In trying to start the car, Ryan caused damage to the extent of 10/. He was sober at the time. In sentencing Ryan to 14 days* imprisonment, the magistrate ordered that he be placed aboard his ship if it sailed before the expiry of the term.
