CREEK FROZEN OVER

NOVELTY AT WHANGAREI

FIRST TIME IN MEMORY

(0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. Many Whangarei residents saw river ice" for the first time in their lives this morning, when a creek near the Whangarei Town Wharf was frozen from bank to bank for the first time in memory. Readings taken in Central Avenue this morning showed 15 degrees of frost, while in some homes the thermometer was only two degrees above freezing point. Yesterday the highest reading was 53 degrees. The average winter temperature in Whangarei is 58 degrees. Water in the gutters in the streets was frozen, and from 10 o'clock this morning ice was still present in shaded parts. Cars left out-of-doors last night w6re this morning covered with frost, and windshields' were coated with ice. Damage was caused to many gardens and fruit trees.
