Dr.* • the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council standing committee meeting yesterday afternoon. The increased development of camps close to the city had resulted in larger numbers of men now being on leave each week-end, said Mr. Ahum, with the result that the sleeping accommodation at both the Carrie Hostel and the Y.M.C.A. was insufficient. The suggestion had been made that the Y.M.C.A. be authorised to extend its accommodation.
Replying to a further suggestion that the National Patriotic Fund Board should provide money for the provision of accommodation, the secretary, Mr. K. L. Usmar, stated that its funds could be used only within camps, whereas the council wa£ responsible for expenditure outside camps. It was agreed to ask the Auckland metropolitan zone committee for a report.
A report giving details of weekend accommodation, which had been considered adequate, was submitted to the Auckland Metropolitan Committee last night following a conference between the committee and representatives of the Rotary Club and the Y.M.C.A. held on July 2. A statement had also been submitted by the Y.M.C.A. that an extra 25 beds and the alterations and facilities would cost £308.
The expenditure of the sum on Y.M.C.A. extensions was approved.
