EACH MAN DRAWS THE SHOT; UNUSUAL WIN IN EDWIN STARS BOWLS

(By TRUNDLER.)

Matches can be ivon in many wave on the bowling green for anything eeoms to be possible, but no instance occurs to mind w'here a game has been •won like last Saturday's challenge for the Edwin Stars. The game at West; End had run evenly, usually in favour of the Te l'apapa visitor*. who started the nineteenth end with their score at 17 to IC. To the nurpriee of both sides the holders scored four st tins critical stage, to lead by three, and maintained that advantage to the finish, as eac-h eide scored one more point. A four to wii>. has been obtained hundreds of times, possibly thousands, bu-C the feature in this four was that they ■were all drawn, one by each member of the team, and the opponents failed to save any one of them. Kesult: F. J. Newell, A. E. Oyerington, A. H. Stichbury, F. Xeedham (West End), holders, 21, v. J. Xoonan, l-\ J. Morris, A. L. Mocn, S. J. Moire (Te Tapapa), challengers, 18. The next challengers are F. Eehelby (St. Helier's), E. K. Buckley (.Grey Lynn) and J. C. Taplin (.Transport"). The Denisou Pine were also won with a four on the critical nineteenth end, a beautiful trail to the credit of Glenieter. Up to that stage the game had been jus'J as close as in the Edwin Stars, all equare on the seventeenth, and one lo Pousonby on the eighteenth. Neither side took any chances after the successful trail, the game ending: K. J. Carbines, U. M. Piper, F. J. McKinstry, G. S. Glenister (Ponsonby), holders, 21, v. W. E. Oughton, 11. Baxter, L. J. Ayre, J. C. Yeo (RacKy Nook), challengers, 10. Next to challenge are W. Horscroft (Transport), C. J. Moon (Mount Eden) and F. Dyson (Hallyburton Johnstone). Another win for the Groy Lynn Returned Soldiers has left the Diggers' Badges where they have been since last October. The game was even for about' three parte of the way, but the holders afterwards 'had everything their own way, to win again by a comfortable margin: J. Armstrong, L. Shine, J. C. Preston, VV. E. Mincham (Grey Lynn), holders, 20, v. J. Proud, H. Caterall, J. Matchotr, E. W. Taylor (Carlton), challengers, 13. Soldiers to try their luck next are J. Maud (St. Helier's), K. Cross (Onehunga) and J. P. Lane (Mount Albert). A six to Mangere on the eighteenth end to make rhem one up, and she dead ends at various etag<se, did not prevent Onehunga from capturing the Jordan Pine, by a narrow margin, the final score being: C. A. Doel, K. C. Bell, L. G. Grace, R. Laing (Onehunga), challengers, 22, v. W. H. Banks, E. H. Solomon, J. A. Granger, C. T. Wadsworth (Mangere), holders, IS. The game was fairly close all the way, Mangere leading off with a good start, but the Onehunga four soou recovered, after the discovery that long ends on a rather heavy green suited them better than the local players. Grace did all the driving for the visitors, sending the jack out of bounds three times, and the nine dead ends made it a long game, which both eides thoroughly enjoyed in the brilliant sunshine. The next challengers are E. G. Jeffrey (Transport) and G. Bevin (Ellerslie). The postponed two-Saturday tournament at Hilteboro made a good start with 28 rinks occupying tlie two preen.s. Three rounds were played, and it is hoped to dispose of the remaining trwo and any section ties next Saturday.
