HOUSE SURGEONS
CALLED FOR SERVICE
RELEASE MADE CONDITIONAL
In a letter which the Hospital Board received from the DirectorGeneral of Health, Dr. M. H Watt last evening, it was stated that in order to meet a pressing need of young medical men for service with the armed forces, the National Medical Committee had had under consideration a proposal to replace as a war measure, a proportion of house surgeons on the staff of public hospitals by sixth-year medical students. Five house surgeons had been selected from the Auckland Hospital, and the board was asked to make immediate arrangements to replace them.
In another communication Dr. Watt said that a further estimate of the Army Department's requirements had been made and the release of four additional house surgeons was requested.
The chairman, Mr. Allan J. Moody, said that five had been taken, and they wanted more. The board felt that it was a duty to release them. There was, however, a duty to Auckland. Soldiers were returning.
The board decided that until satisfactory arrangements were made to ensure that final examinations would not interfere with the running of the hospital, and until provisional registration was arranged for students acting as residents, the board should not release any more medical officers.
