"DUMPING" ON WHARVES
SYSTEM OPPOSED BY MEN The Auckland Waterside Workers' Union, at the monthly stopwork meeting, decided to refuse to discharge cargo by the "dumping" system in cases where the stevedores considered it would be quicker than by working with the usual slings. Under the dumping system large quantities of freight are lowered on to the wharves in nets. A recent conference of interested bodies asked that the dumping system be instituted in Auckland, but when the proposal was conveyed to the men by the president of the union, Mr. T. H. Solomon, it was rejected. Among the grounds of objection were congestion on the wharves by more cargo coming out of the holds than could be immediately dealt with, the extra handling of cargo, the doubt that sufficient or large enough nets were available, and the cost of extra labour. Auckland stevedores expressed the opinion yesterday that they believed the discharge of cargo could be expedited by the dumping system and that it would be worth while employing more men at the ships' sides to wheel away the cargo if it meant that the ship would be discharged more quickly. The matter will be referred to the Waterfront Control Commission.
