Dividend From Same Family As Charlatan

In the years following the Great I War the Riccarton trainer T. H. Giljlett raced Charlatan with success for jMr J. S. Barrett, while later he trained Charlatan's half-brother. IPunchestOwn, a good but unsound (Steeplechaser, for Mr J. H. Grigg. Another generation has since come ialong and the latest member of the ifamiiy. Dividend, brought his earnings up to £2190 when he scored easy successes in the Remuera and Campbell iHurdles at Ellerslie. Dividend was bred by his owner, Mr ]E. Hay, who bought Divinia, grandof Dividend, and his dam Divinette, from Mr Grigg. Dividend is a good-looking six-year-old chestnut gelding by Lord Warden from Divinette. by Thurnham from Divinia, by Sylvia Park from Mongonui, a Carbine mare bred by Major George in 1895. (Produced Good Jumpers. ! Divinia did her part in carrying on the line, producing Charlatan to \Vinkie and Punchestown and Divinette to Thurnham, and several |Other lesser lights. 1 Charlatan raced for many seasons |his victories being the South Canterbury Pareora Hunters, Christchurch (Hunt Lawford, C.J.C. Enfield, Ashburton Winter, South Canterbury (twice), Wingatui and Dunedin Steeplechases. As a seven-year-old Charlatan was unplaced in the Grand National Steeplechase, but in the two following years he finished third to Peter Maxwell and Kawini, and to Beau Cavalier and Peter Maxwell. Punchestown, like Divinette, was by a good sire of junipers in Thurnham. In the early stages of his career Punchestown was raced on lease by Mr J. J. Lewis, of Ashburton, winning ! several races on the flat in his jcolours. He was for a time in the [Washdyke stable of E. J. Ellis and 'while there won over hurdles. While ■- Jtrained at Riccarton he won the Enfield Steeplechase, while in the Grand National of 1935 he was the runner-up to Valpeen. •. 'Has Done Well. Dividend was unplaced in his few ■tarts as a two-year-old and a i number of starts in the following term : brought in only £5 from a third ' ®i nc 6 then he has won the , iO ta ßo Hurdles, C.J.C. Port Cooper ' Spring Hurdles and the,

Jumpers' Flat, and the Rangiora Handicap. He rounded off his record with his £llerslie successes. The present is easily hia beet season, having brought in £1435. He was in the Otago Hurdles and had he been equal to winning the race would have earned £190 with little chaifte of earning anything more at the meeting, whereas his Ellerslie successes brought in £850. Earlier in the season Dividend, usually a clever jumper, had a bad fall while schooling at Riccarton, injuring his neck. It was thought at the time that he would be off the scene for at least six months, but he made a grand recovery in quick time. Dividend should do well when the time comes for liim to start off as a steeplechaser as he is likely to be as proficient over the bigger fences as he is over hurdles.
