LEAGUE FOOTBALL AND AMATEUR ATHLETICS
Ban Removed by N.S.W. Provided No Payment
THE last obstacle to a League footballer competing as an amateur in athletics was brushed aside recently when the New South Wales Athletic Association removed the ban long rigidly enforced. Rugby League players, although they playecl the code for no reward, were definitely on the "outer" when it came to competing as track runners at Sydney amateur meetings. But for this ban, many university athletes would have plaved League when the Sydney 'Varsity thirteen took a prominent part in League competition a few years ago. The test case arose over a challenge to the status of Bruce Ryan, Newtown League Club, and a prominent amateur runner.
The new law, which came into operation a few weeks ago, reads:— "Members of the Amateur Athletic Association may play in Rugby League competitions without infringing their amateur status, prosided they make a declaration that they have not been paid by football clubs."
