RURAL HOUSING

RATEPAYERS' LIABILITY OPINION OP FARMERS The Rural Housing Act was discussed by the Auckland provincial conference of the New Zealand Farmers' Union to-day in the light of the responsibility thrown on county councils in the event of default by the occupier. The conference decided to approve the principle of the Act, but recommended its amendment to provide for the removal of the contingent liability from the ratepayers and the facilitating of loans where the usual security margin did not exist. It was also decided to request that the State Advances Settlers Department funds be earmarked for farm use, and not used for any other purposes, funds taken from the Workers' Department being refunded and the Reserve Bank used to facilitate this.
