WELL TOUCHED
AUCKLAND'S TWEEDS BIG STREET APPEAL That genial genie, the carnival spirit, was again lot loose in the city to-day to the now well-known tune of rattling collection boxes, shouts of '"barkers," blaring loudspeakers and laughter. Groups four and seven in the Fighters' Mother campaign were conducting a '"Touch Your Tweeds" appeal to aid their efforts towards tlu 1 Fighting Forces Fund.
Concert parties were stationed at many corners in Queen Street and collectors had a great day. Confronted with hordes of colourfully costumed Red Indians. Arab sheiks, gypsies, admirals, Chinese mandarins. Oionno quintuplets and clowns, ihe public did not have a chance. They realised it and "'touched their tweeds'' well and cheerfully in a manner that should add a considerable amount to the fund. (Jaily decorated floats bore such -ic.uans as "Money Talks: Let Yours Yell." "Cone With a Smile" and •Spare l\s a Boh to Get On With the .lob." and round these gathered large and amused crowds. Booths set up all round the city were also well patronised. Prizes in the art unions which have been arranged include a piano, large orders for furniture and drapery, a trotting horse and sulky, a thoroughbred racehorse, »a polo pony and a child's pony, and their total value is £2.000.
Highlights of the street day were the German mine displayed on a truck with a paravane, the astonishing variety of fantastic costumes and hilarious antics of the collectors and the generosity of the public.
Representing group four, food and liquor. Mrs. F. S. Jarvis has one son in the Air Force and two in the Army. Mrs. M. E. Turtill is the mother representing group seven, warehouses, retail stores and the leather trade. Her husband was killed in the last war and her three sons arc serving with the N.Z.E.F.
