FAMOUS N.Z. HORSES

GREATEST MARE OF L.AST CENTURX "The year of the exit of Peeress from the turf saw the dawn of a new era. For some years the stock of Traducer has been showing good form, but nothing more, and the advent in the same season of his two great daughters, Lurline and Calumny, set a standard in New Zealand racing that had never before been reached. Both were bred by Mr. S. Nosworthy, Lurline's dam being the famous Mermaid, while Calumny was out of the Sir Hercules mare Gitana. Both made their first appearance on a racecourse at the same meeting at Riccarton, and their careers went hand-in-hand till they ended at Mr. Gardiner's Bundoora Stud in Victoria. Calumny was both in appearance and performance a racehorse of the highest class, but was excelled by Lu"rline, who was admitted on all hands to be the best mare that had raced in Australasia up to that date." This quotation is taken from an article in the current issue of the "New Zealand Farmer Weekly," where a remarkably interesting series of articles, "Famous New Zealand Horses," is appearing. A specimen copy of this racing section of this popular journal will be sent post free on application to the Manager, New Zealand Newspapers, Ltd., Auckland.
