NORTH SHORE NEED
The urgent need of a hospital for the North Shore was_ emphasised last evening by Mr. K. L. Usmar. one of the candidates to represent the North Shore Boroughs on the Auckland Hospital Board, when he addressed meetings at Birkenhead, Northcote. Takapuna and Devonport. "Talk must now give way to united and sustained action on the part of the residents of the North Shore to ensure that as soon as possible a modern hospital with maternity annexe is provided for the longsuffering districts concerned," said Mr. Usmar. He added that he regarded the prospect of a cottage hospital as an unpalatable sop to growing public agitation, as the urgent need was a hospital with maternity facilities, one that would meet present requirements, and have some regard for the needs of 25 years hence. Urgency was lent to the need by the strategical relationship of North Shore, and its importance in the event of proclaimed emergency. Mr. Usmar claimed that the obstacles, technical and otherwise, were surmountable if the will to overcome them existed, and common sense would bring the realisation. He considered that the Auckland Hospital Board would find a partial solution of one of its major problems by the provision of an up-to-date hospital at North Shore.
