SOLID GOVERNMENT SUPPORT Rec. 11.30 a.m. RUGBY. May n. The result of the first contested Parliamentary by-election fur -ome months was announced when Canlain Basil Pcio (Con.i was returned as member for the Kings North Division of Birmingham. The former member. Mr. Ronald Canland ' was reported missing n; Dunkirk la-t June. An interesting feature of the election was the appearance of an Independent Pacifist candidate Mr Stuart Morns, and of an Independent Reprisals" candidate D*Smith. who pressed for retaliatory air attacks against German towns It will be recalled that business and residential quarters in Birmingham have been heavilv bombed Both candidates suffered an overwhelming defeat and forfeited their deposit.-. The result was: Captain Basil Ptfto (Con.). 21.573: Dr. Smith 'Ind Rep). 1696; Mr. Stuart Morris 'Ind. Pac), 1552.
