QUARTER'S IMPORTS

WAR AND MOTOR TRADE That the importation of motor vehicles into New Zealand has -been almost completely stopped is revealed in statistics for the first three months of this year compiled and issued by the Comptroller of Customs. The returns state that the total value of motor cars and commercial vehicles imported for the quarter was only £16,847, compared with a normal total of nearly £2,000,000 before the war. In the latest figures £9625 represents the value of assembled lorries, trucks or buses, of which there were four, £3816 the value of unassembled commercial vehicles, a total of 12 and £3406, the value of motor cars,' of which all except one in a total of seven were imported in an assembled condition. The trade was confined almost entirely to the Empire, only one motor car being imported from the United States. Of the commercial vehicles imported for assembly in New Zealand nine were from Canada.
