NATIONAL GOVERNMENT

CHAMBER OP COMMERCE VIEW

In reply to a letter from the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce on the question of whether the Associated Chambers of Commerce should, as an organisation, urge the setting up of a National Government in place of a general election, the Wellington executive said that it did not see that events since March 28 had in any way pointed a reason for departure from the opinion of the New Zealand Executive at that date. This information was contained in a letter from the Wellington executive received at a meeting to-day of the Auckland council. Regard has been paid to the fact that the New Zealand executive at its meeting on March 28, considering the same question,"had endorsed the action that had been taken in advising one chamber which had asked that the Government should be approached on the same lines as recommended by the Auckland Chamber that the request could not be met. The reasons for this were that opinions on the subject were greatly divided, and that it was, in any case, a party political question in which it was not desirable that the Associated Chambers should become involved.
