IMPORTANT WbRK.

MATHEMATICS POST.

APPEAL FOR LECTURER

The importance of the work of Cecil Maiin Segedin, a lecturer in mathematics at the Auckland University College, was stressed at to-day's sitting of the Xo. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board, when an appeal was entered by the college council through Mr. H. P. Richmond for postponement of the reservist's calling up until Xovember of this year.

Mr. Richmond said that the reservist was 2.j years of age and an extremely competent lecturer in the mathematics department, which was responsible for the preparation of pupils taking the engineering and radio-physics courses. He was assisting in preparing those who would render valuable military aid to their country and it was considered that his services were more valuable in his present position

It was a work of national importance and there was no one in view who could take the position. There were no retired professors or lecturers available and if the reservist was called up the college would be thrown back on the use of 3'oung men inexperienced in lecturing and the type ctf mathematics that were handled by Segedin.

Professor H. G. Forder, professor of mathematics at the college, said that the reservist had had the opportunity once before of getting a job in connection with the Air Force and in that case would have been exempted from military service. He was a particularly valuable man and the college would be placed in a dilemma if his services were lost.

The professor added that even if adjournment was granted till the end of the year the situation would arise again and he would like to see the case completely closed.

Adjournment was granted sine die with the proviso that the reservist should continue in his present position.
