COOKED EELS.
FOR MAORI BATTALION. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Seven cases of cooked and cured eels arrived at the National 'Patriotic Fund Board's store, Wellington, this afternoon, from the Arowhenua Maori Runanga, Temuka. They are for the Maori Battalion overseas.
In a letter to the board Mr. Tamaio P. Paiki, chairman of the runanga, said the catching, preservation and packing of the eels involved a considerable amount of community effort on the part of his people, who were eager to assist •in the war effort and to provide some Maori food* for their kinsmen overseas. He added he was sure the fish could be shipped anywhere, even through the tropics. According to the letter, the consignment comprises approximately 2000 properly cooked and cured (sun-dried) eels. Already the board has sent special delicacies to Maori troops overseas and they have arrived on good order. They have included mutton birds and dried crayfish received from Maoris on the east coast of the Xorth Island.
