— — ■ -■ ■ » j 100 YEARS OF SETTLEMENT. I (P.A.i NEW PLYMOUTH. Sunday. Taranaki's celebration of 100 years of European settlement was opened to-day with special thanksgiving services. Children attended a service in Pukekura Park this morning, and a citizens' service was held this afternoon near the memorial to the first settlers erected at Ngamotu Reach, close to where thev landed on March 111, IX4I. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Eraser, and the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. K. Parry, are. visiting New Plymouth for the celebrations. The Prime Minister unveiled a memorial to the Rev. Charles Creed, the first minister of religion in Tnriyinki. who was waiting on the 'beach to welcome the arrivals on the William Bryan. the first colonist ship. The Governor-General. Sir Cyril Ncwall, and I.ady Newall, arrived by aeroplane to-day to participate in the celebrations to-morrow.
