GRAIN AND PRODUCE.
MARKETS IN THE SOUTH. (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH. Friday. The grain and produce markets have been quiet this week, rain having held up deliveries of many lines in the meantime. Potatoes have been consistently firmer in recent weeks, although there has been very little business, as farmers are reluctant sellers. It appears that the crop this year will be shorter than usual by a good margin. The area under potatoes is smaller than last year and the weather this season has been far from good. Business has been don-" this week n* £ti a ton and there are reports that this price has been exceeded. Not a great quantity of oats is being olfered. A Cartons are worth 3 to 3 1. with B's at about 29. Algerians are worth abou•, 2G. There is a steady, but not large, demand for chaff, which is worth £4 a ton. It is expected that the amount of red clover this season will not be large, but the few samples so far to hand indicate that quality will be high. Little business has been done yet. but best seed has changed hands at up to 1 3. Deliveries of white clover continue to be made. Exceptionally good samples are worth up to 2'.
