LEAN TO BRITAIN.
French Opposition To Nazi Demands. ITALIAN DEFEATS HAILED. NEW YORK, Jan. 3. On his return from the French island of Martinque, in the West Indies, * correspondent of the United Press reports that passengers by the first ship to arrive from France for three months stated that there was widespread opposition in unoccupied France to the growing demands of the Germans. The French Fleet and armies in Africa were being used by Petain in a desperate effort to avert complete occupation. The French had jubilantly hailed the Italian reverses in Egypt, and had ceased recriminations against Britain, which had been restored to high favour. The French morale was high. People •were saying Franco ought to have a Chance to repay Italy's stab in the back, and the British should not have the sole pleasure of battering the Italians.
