LONG TENNIS STRUGGLE AT HAMILTON ENDS IN ROACH'S FAVOUR.
(0.C.) HAMILTON, this day. In the final of the combined doubles at the Waikato tennis championships to-day F. Jenkinson and Miss Margaret Beverley beat L. Roach and Miss C. Buckley. 6—4. 6—2. Jenkinson and Miss Beverley attacked throughout, both driving with great power and accuracy on either hand, while their overhead work was also sound. There were flashes of brilliant play, but the other pair were on' the defensive practically throughout. In the women's A grade singles Miss M. Beverley beat Miss C. Buckley, β-o, 7—5. Mies Beverley played great tennis, but was fully extended by Miss Buckley In the second set.
J; Roach, Auckland and Walkato champion, maintained his reputation by a grand victory in the men's singles after being down 7—5, 4—6, 4 —6, to J. Charters. Roach played brilliantly to win the next two sets 6—2. 6—o. Despite a gruelling two-and-a-half hours* battle Roach finished strongly. * Misses Margaret and? Nessie Beverley retained their Walkato doubles tournament title by defeating D. Buckley and Miss B. Potter 6—2, 6 4. In the South Island. Auckland and Walkato doubles championship J. Roach and D. Livingstone were having a hard tussle to hold their Walkato title up to the time of going to press They lost the first set to L. - Roach and R Mutaschka B—6, but won the second set 7 5. The holders were beaten in the third set 6 4 and the game was not finalised at 6 o'clock.
