Having perforce to spend a few Ajs in a country township during the period of a two-day race meeting , , one wa* struck by the evident ease -with whirli the war can be suspended in the mind* of many. Xot one person seemed to care that the new Axis line-up nay bring danger nearer to Xew Zealand. The only questions asked were, "Know any winners?"' "What will win the cup?"' Hundreds of care seemed to ht«" j 'iifficient petrol to reach the course, and l>y 1 p.m. perhaps two men and a do£ might be seen in the main street. Latein the afternoon a well-dreaded wojmh, accompanied by a man in military uniform, collapsed in a drunken etai* 'on the roadway outside this house. mH two otlior men staggered drunkenly townwards. Perbajvs it was jnet reaction to the anxieties of the period. Otherwise it evidence? the uncoinprehendinjr spirit animating many Sew Zealanders. Iβ thie war merely a jote? ENGLISHMAN.
