SUMMER BOWLING.

OFFICIAL OPENINGS.

MANY GREEKS WIIX BE BUST NEXT SATURDAY. (By TRUXDLER.) The St. Heiler's decision to open the Summer season with an official ceremony, instead of the usual informal opening and a ceremonial "At Home -, later in the seaspn, resulted in an exceptionally representative gathering laet Saturday. The only counter-attraction wae the official summer opening at Papakura. where the centre was represented by Messrs. G. F. Frieberg, W. J. Short ami M. J. Walsh. All the other members of the centre executive, except a few who were out of town, attended the St. Helier's opening. The announcement of the club president. Mr. A. W. Scotting. that all the profits on the reason's tournaments would be reserved for patriotic efforts, is in line with the club's fine assistance a few months ago in giving a benefit tournament to the new club at Waimauku.

There will not be enough members of the centre executive to go round next Saturday, for in addition to Auckland and Otahuhu opening informally, there will be official ceremonies at Auckland Transport, Avondale, Carlton. Edendale, Mangere, Manurewa. Mount Albert, Mount Eden. Papatoetoe. Pukekohe. Rawhlti, Rocky Nook, Tc Papapa and Waitemata.

However, a centre president has been known to surmount a similar difficulty by asking a delegate to act as his deputy, and it has been suggested occasionally that when only one member of the centre executive can attend an opening it would probably be accepted by the club as a compliment if he made up a rink by taking three delegates.

The final of the Te Papapa two-day tournament was played on Saturday, resulting in a win for O. Vazey. A. Fisher, O. Fisher, S. W. Thompson (HlllsDoro). who defeated J. Davenport's local rink by 16 to 13.

A feature in the Jordan Pins match on Saturday was another pronounced win for the challengers. One would expect, all other conditions being fairly equal, that the holders would win again, after having successfully played together, but on the last six occasions the challengers have won. usually by a heavy margin. This year, in the eighteen matches played, the challengers have won twelve times, and on Saturday It was a real runaway from the start, the final score being: T. Ferguson A. MacKenzle. E. J. Mitchell. H. L. Joll (EUerslie) 21, v. L. Ore. S. Roper. W. H. Horscroft. J. C. Taplin (Transport) holders 7. The new owners of Mr. Jordan's trophies may expect an Onehunga rink next Saturday in the charge of H. E. Welham.

The run has been just the opposite In the Denison Pins, the Grey Lynn holders having successfully resisted seven challengers In succession Saturday's game was merely a procession, the holders being 18 to 2 at one stage and the final score still left a heavy margin: T. W. Mayson W McMurchy, E. E. Buckley, H. Whittle (Grey Lynn) holders 24. v. G. Dronsficld. P. Gerrard. E. N Davles. W. Leather (Devonport) challengers 16. The vistlng lead made a good showing for a time but the others were obviously outclassed on the day. Next Saturday A. Hitchen (Stanley) will take a rink to Grey Lynn.

A really good game at Mount Eden transferred the Edwin Stars to Auckland. The visitors made a good start, and were two up at the tea adjournment, but the local players evened the score at the fifteenth end. They were also level at 17 all on the nineteenth, but Auckland won the rest to win by three: A. 1. Clarke. J. Pascoe. H.' Luke, W. Ure 20. v. C. J. Moon. L. L. Joll. L. Joll. A. E. Harland (Mount Eden) holders 17.

As Auckland is opening the new season next Saturday this will be the last game till next winter.

. Onehunga again successfully defended the Diggers' Badges, the score being: W. H. Zuill J. R. Collin, H. A. Robertson. S. Vella 24 v K° Hagen, H. Cluitt. S. Nash, E. G. Jeffrey (Transport) challengers 17. There was not so much driving as usual, but occasionally some spectacular shots altered the position. The local team were seven to nil on four ends, and 14 to 11 when they adjourned for tea, but the visitors really had no hope against a third and a skip who were ready to smash up any unfavourable head. The next challenger is L. Shine (Grey Lynn), and that wll be the last game for the season, as both of the clubs Interested are opening on October 12.
