ST. JOHN AMBULANCE.

BRIGADE APPOINTMENT.

MRS. G. S. CAHHELL.

Advice has been received recently that the Chief Commissioner for the Dominion of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, Colonel G. Barclay, has approved of the promotion of Mrs. G. S. Cam me 11 to the rank of lady district superintendent, the highest position yet attained by a lady in the St. John Ambulance Brigade in Auckland.

Mrs. Cammell enrolled in the brigade as a member of the Auckland nursing division in November, 1914, and was transferred during the following year to the national reserve nursing division, where she was appointed as the first lady divisional superintendent. Mrs. Cammell held this position until 1932. when she was appointed lady corps superintendent, and in 1939 was further promoted to the rank of lady district officer. In addition to being a member of several .public committees, Mrs. Cammell was the founder of the brigade medical comforts' depot, which lends or hires articles to members of the public requiring them.

The brigade sewing guild for war work was started by Mrs. Cammell in 1914. This guild continued its activities during peace time by making clothes for distribution by the district nurses among poor people. During the past year the guild has resumed its original work, several of the foundation members again being active helpers, and recently 8000 dressings for the Auckland Hospital were completed within the short period of two weeks by these voluntary workers.

Mrs. Cammell was awarded the service medal of the brigade in 1928, and has since been awarded two bars, each denoting extra periods of five years' efficient service. In 1934 she was invested a member of the Venerable Order in the grade'of Serving Sieter, and in 1939 received notification of her promotion to •the grade of "Officer of the Order."
