AMERICAN WOMEN.
MORE FIGURE-CONSCIOUS,
A well-known corsetiere, returning from America recently, said that she felt that the comparatively small number of really well-groomed women in this oountiy could be explained not so much by their attitude to dress— women were quite as thoroughly dressconscious here as in the States—but by their attitude of what went tinder the dress. In short, American women were far more figure-conscious than we are.
The evidence was everywhere, she declared. In the wonderfully groomed appearance of every other woman she passed on any New York street, in the enormous number of big concerns turning out thousands of foundation garments every month, and in the way the foundations themselves were eold there. In good fashion stores most of them were purchased in the dress departments. In other words, most American women, when buying a new frock, understood the wisdom of buying the new foundation specially created for it, to bring out the true smartness of its line.
