NOTES AND COMMENTS.
DEATH OF SPORTSMAN. The death occurred on Saturday of Mr. J. F. McKendrjr, a well-known Christchurch HlKtrtHiimn, and up to a few years ago a prominent owner of trotters and pacers. Possibly the best horse Mr. McKendrjr owned was the consistent Logan Chief, one of the beet two-mllere. when ■the sport was particularly strong, in- stayers. Another high grade pacer was Belinda, while Master Pointer, Aleron, 'Headlight, Germanlcug, Delightful and. Quickflre were others to carry hie purple and silver colours successfully. In his younger days Mr. McKendry was a prominent footballer, and was captain of the first Rugby fifteen that ever played for the 'Marlst Brothers' School, when he died he was president of the Athletic Football Club and * keen member ' of the Avondale Golf Club ; TROTTER OR PACER. Dark Hazard did little racing last season, starting only eix times; but he paid expenses when he won the Walrnate Handicap at the Oiimaru meeting. Dark Hazard is one of the few horses to win at' both the pacing and trotting gait*, and in the latter division h.e will -be given another i chance at New Brighton. MAH JONG IN SOUTH. Mah Jong, previously trained here by J. T. Paul, but now-in J. Bryce's care, will make her first appearance on a Canterbury track at New Brighton, and after her excellent record of last season ehe will have some admirers. Now six years old, Mah Jong was started only eight times last year, and she won thr.ee races, was second 'twice, and , third twice. Mali Jong Iβ bred to trot, for by imported Maxegin, her dam is Katute, a daughter of - Nelaon Bingen and Muricata. Like her dam, this trotter Iβ roan In colour.
