WINDING ENGINEMEN.
SAFEGUARDS IMPOSED.
WELLINGTON, this day. The Goldfields and Mines Committee returned the Statutes Amendments Bill to the House of Representatives with several changes in the clause which gives power to grant exemptions from the requirements of certificated winding enginemen for such periods as recommended by the Secretary of. Marine.
The Department, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners' Committee imposed the condition that these exemptions should be limited to a period not exceeding eix months at any time. This, it was explained, would prevent men with inferior certificates from holding higher positions for too long a period but sufficiently long for them to qualify for winding enginemen's certificates.
Exemption is also to be subject to the condition that no fully qualified person is available.
Other changes by the committee include the safeguard that any person exempted from the full requirements must hold some form of enginedriver's certificate.
The bill -was referred to the Labour Bills and Lands Committee for further consideration.—(Parity. Reporter.)
