TRAPPED 'POSSUMS.
ON SCENIC RESERVE
MAORI'S DOUBLE OFFENCE. Prosecuted by the Auckland Acclimatisation Society on charges of entering a scenic reserve, and taking opossums without a license, a Maori named Joseph Rangl ap]>eared before Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Cburt to-day and pleaded guilty. Mr. Peter Jenkins, who prosecuted for the society, said Mr. Bleakley, ctief ranger of the northern patrols' ranger service, found Rangi trapping opossums in the Wairoa scenic reserve at Clevedon about 9 a.m. on July 14. "Thw ie regarded by the society *as a serious offence and one that k. difficult to detect," said' Mr. Jenkins. "Raiigi is employed t>y an orchardist who is allowed to trap opossums on his property or within half a mile, of the property. But in this cate Rangi was trapping well away from the property and on a scenic reserve." Rangi told the magistrate that he thought he could trap on his employer's permit. "But you had no right to enter npon a scenic reserve even with a permit," the magistrate told him, in fining defendant £5 on one charge and ordering him to pay costs on the other. "I realise that now," said Rangi.
