AN UNBEATABLE SPIRIT.

ENGLAND IN THE CRISIS. AUCKLANDER RETURNS.

"The spirit of England to-day is wonderful," said Mrs. Arthur Moore, who returned in the Mariposa this morning from 14 months' stay in London. "They have their backs to the wall, they are ready for anything that might happen, and their one paramount feeling now seems to be that of thankfulness that there ,is no one eke to let them down." Mrs. Moore left Norway just as the war broke out, and joined the Canadian canteen workers in London. She worked with them until two months ago, when she left for home, spending two weeks in Canada on the way over. | "There were 1600 evacuees on the ship ' we went over on," Mrs. Moore said, "in- ' eluding many hundreds of children. They | were not in the least concerned at leav--1 ing their homes, but thoroughly enjoyed J the trip. They thought it was great ! sport—a new and wonderful game. 1 Among them were the Earl of Athlohe'e ' grandchildren. They were nearly all the children of aristocratic parents." 1 What annoys Mrs. Moore now is when she comes across the defeatist? attitude of those who think that England will.get i "licked." "No one could have lived for ! nearly a year in London—through the dreadful blackouts and in that constant awareness of •. danger—lived there and grown to know the spirit in which England is' meeting the crisis, and have any doubts of its outcome," she said. "The courage of every man, woman and child is something that there are no words for, | but there it is an unbeatable spirit."
