HONOUR CONTRACTS.
NEED FOR APPRENTICES. MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT. (From Our Correspondent.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday. The need for apprentices to honour their contracts, no matter what the conditions under which they work, was stressed by Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, when the inspector of factories proceeded against Arthur Abbott Walker. « Mr. C. P. Collins said that Walker left his job because of strained relations with the foreman. Two other apprentices had left for the same reason. However, the Department was concerned about the maintenance of apprenticeship contracts, which provided a training ground for youths.
Mr. L. Laurenson, counsel for Walker, said hU leaving was the result of the foreman being overbearing.
The magistrate, in fixing the penalty at £2, said it was not a question of the apprentice being- dissatisfied with his wages, because Walker was getting £1 more than the contract.
