COOK ISLANDS MAGISTRATE.

On four months' furlough, the resident agent at Manahiki. in the Noiihern Cook Islands. Mr. L. I renn. accompanied bv his wife, has arrived in Auckland. and he intends to spend the whole of his leave in the Dominion. Mr. Trenn is governor and magistrate over about 1000 natives on the islands of Manahiki and R.ikahanga, and the only other European residents are two French priests. Describing life on the islands. Mr. Trenn said that this was very simple. The low prices for copra during' the past few years had caused some "hardships among the natives, whose only tridinsr contact with the markets was through boats which called three or four times a year. Magisterial duties were very light,, and there was little crime on the islands.
