TWO NEW TRACKS.
ON MATAMATA COURSE F. DAVIS' TEAM. CHEDDINGTON RESUMES WORK Matamata is becoming quite an important centre for the training of racehorses, and at present no fewer than fifty thoroughbreds are being handled llieie by a dozen trainers and ownertrainers. The club in leaving no etone unturned to provide up-to-date galloping facilities, and during recent weeks the caretaker, Air. K. J. Carrie, baa completed two new tracks, one a grass and the other a plough, thus making four available for training.
The well-known trainer F. Davis, who developed such champions as |>esrrt Cold and Bobrikoff. and a host of other highclass performers, including Downfall. F.stl.ind. l'ete-a-Tete. Fininark nnd Nlgjrcr Minstrel, speaks in laudatory terms of the tracks, which he says dry exceptionally quickly after heavy rain, such is the nature of the soil, and. on the other hand, do not become hard during hot weather.
Davis transferred his team to Ma fa mat a from Auckland a few months ago, and he is now working Coronation. IVrn, Worton nnd Cheddington for Mr. \V. H. flalsford, for whom lie acts as private trainer. These four horses have been gelded since they last raced, and have done very well lipon resuminz. Cheddington was an over-grown youngster when last seen out, but he has now furnished into a handsome horse, nnd It will be surprising If lie does not worthily represent Phaleron Bay next season. Hewn s beaten on the post by Lou Rosa in the Or en t Northern Foal Stakes on Boxing Day. Coronation, a four-yenr-old by Llmond—Jewel of Asia, has not raced this season, but will be given a run at Matamata. • Martin Has Big String.
It. Martin is a busy man these days, his team comprising 20 horses, among them being Expellent, Radiant Bay, I.ord Waltangi, Paymaster. Surveyor's Lass. Prince Jay, Silver Cloud, Greek Queen, Allmetic, Te Hal, Esquire, Captain Bell, Winning Tray and King Rey. Silver Cloud, Esquire, Paymasler and Greek Queen are comparatively recent winners, while some of the others have filled minor positions. In addition to the horses named. Martin Is handling some rising two-year-olds. A particularly nice filly, and one likely to develop early speed, is by Foxbridge from Fantastic, by Day Comet from Persis, the dam of Tuahine. Nucleus, Gay Seton, etc. Others are a full sister to Greek Queen, known as Greek Princess, and a filly by Bulandshar—Minnlkin. The two-year-old Paymaster (Autopay—Te Walpii), who followed two seconds with a win in the Jack Tanner Memorial Handicap at the Bay of Plenty meeting on March 9, has only recently resumed work after a spell, during which he grew considerably. ' Other teams' located at Matamata are : J_. W. Cathro, with Flying Acre, Kaspiau, Kilcash, Douglas Hyde (a three-year-old Irish-bred colt), Manvaalsr Hutuwai, Full of Scotch and au Australian-bred Spearhead colt owned by Mr. W. 11. Barton, who used to race Enge and others; R. H. Mateer, with Val Lu, Miss Ridicule, Face Value, Pleuron, a Lord Quex colt, and a two-year-old by Hunting Song; J. Clothier. Royal Dance, Te Haka, Lady Fea and Prince Rewa : F. Hirst, Town Section, Tea Chat and a rising three-year-old half-sister, by Hunting Song to Town Section : Mrs. N. 1. Burke, General Ruse, Little Ruse and Spats.
HORBES FOR WELLINGTON. Erlick, winner of the York Handicap at Ellerslle on June S, has been sent from Matamata to Wellington, where he Is engaged in the Whyte Handicap on Tuesday. The six-year-old son of Illumination has done well lately, and he is expected to race prominently at Trentham. He will be ridden on the opening day by V. Dye, but there is a likelihood that H. N. Wiggins will have the mount in the Parliamentary Handicap. The novice hack Expellent, who has 8.4 in the Wobura Handicap on Tuesday, was also seat South In charge of V. Dye. He will be ridden by O. Mclnally. The following horses from Ellerslle have been sent to Trentham to fnlfll engagements at the Wellington winter meeting: —Aero King, KUrer Glow, Orate, Brazilian, Prlval and Tutor. DONE HIM GOOD. The Vulture looks as though his winning run in the Novice Stakes at Ashbnrton has done him good, and while he had only a weak field to contend with, he won so easily that he should carry on a winning way if started in the Burnside Hack Handicap at Oamaru. The Vulture le a solid t-hree-yenr-old chestnut gelding by Valkvrian from Silent Flight, and his ability to reach top speed quickly will always be an asset. ATTACKED BY STRANGLES. It was Intended to send King Rev to Wellington, but the aged Raceful geiding developed strangles after the Waipa meeting and the trip had. to be abandoned. At the last winter meeting at Trentham, King Rey won the Trentham Hurdles for Mr. N. Grafas.
